Beef Mince Curry
This beef mince curry – or beef keema recipe – came about because of two things. Firstly, Mister doesn’t much like lamb (a memorable experience on an Australian sheep station is to blame for this). Anyway, beef mince tends to be a cheaper meat and is more widely available.
My lovely step mum also used to make this kind of mince and potato curry when my sister and I were younger. Whenever she offered us the choice of what to have for dinner, we’d request a simple minced beef curry like this. It was one of her specialities. While it might not be quite the same, it definitely had finely chopped onions, minced beef, potatoes, chopped tomatoes and peas in it, all of which I’ve included in this version. I think she used curry powder as a spice mix, while mine contains garam masala and turmeric.
We also love a keema naan when we have an Indian takeaway, and although this is made with beef, I have seen other beef keema recipes out there – as well as those containing lamb.
This is something easy, yet different, to do with mince and with curry, and is delicious and pretty nutritious to boot. There aren’t many minced beef recipes for curry around, but I do love this one. Hopefully my daughter will too, when she’s a bit older.

How to make Beef Mince Curry
- Fry the onion and pepper in a dash of olive oil until they start to soften. Add the garlic, stir and then the ground beef and cook, stirring often, until the mince has browned.
- Add all the other ingredients except for the peas and mushrooms and stir well. Simmer for 10 minutes over a medium heat, stirring now and then.
- Add the peas and mushrooms and simmer for 10 minutes more. Add a splash of water during cooking if needed.
- While the cooking time is short, do make this beef curry recipe in advance if you can, as it gives the flavours time to develop.
Serve with Basmati rice, Naan bread or both.
