This basic biscuit recipe for kids is the indirect result of coronavirus, as schools being closed meant we had to keep Missy busy day in, day out. She’d seen someone baking biscuits on TV, and wanted to try it herself. I operated the food processor and oven, given that she was only six then, but she enjoyed helping with weighing, measuring and cutting out shapes.

Not quite as much as we all enjoyed eating the cookies, though. The chocolate chips are optional – we went for half and half to gain the best of both worlds. These homebaked biscuits have a lovely crunch, as well as that incomparable home-baked taste. And this simple biscuit recipe is really easy to bake.

As we had limited food supplies at the time, we used a combination of demerara and caster sugar. They turned out fine. My mum and Nanna always used ordinary granulated sugar in baking recipes and I do the same. I’ve found it makes no difference – and it’s cheaper and easier to buy.

Biscuit recipe for kids ingredients

  • Plain flour, 150g, plus extra for dusting
  • Sugar, 100g (any granulated kind, from white caster to demerara)
  • Baking powder, 1 tsp
  • Salt, a pinch
  • Baking margarine (or butter), 100g
  • Golden syrup, 1 tbsp
  • Chocolate chips – optional – 50g or 100g (see below)

Equipment

How to make this biscuit recipe for kids

  • Prepare each baking tray by lining with baking paper.
  • Put all of the ingredients except the chocolate chips (if using) into a food processor and mix for 15-20 seconds.
  • At this point I divided the dough into two halves. One half I left plain. The other I put into a mixing bowl, then added chocolate chips and mixed in before rolling out. So I used 50g – if you’re adding them to all the cookie dough then use 100g.
  • Dust the work surface, a rolling pin and your hands with flour.
  • Roll out the dough to around 4-5mm thick, then use cutters to form biscuit shapes.
  • Bake at 160 degrees fan (or equivalent) for about 12-15 minutes until golden.
  • Once removed from the oven, leave these easy biscuits for children on the baking sheets for 10-15 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack until cool enough to eat.
