This crispy honey and lemon chicken was chosen as a child-friendly option for Missy and me. She loves lemon and honey, and has them together on pancakes for breakfast, so that inspired this dinner recipe. Like sweet and sour chicken, it’s surprisingly simple to make yourself.

And a whole lot healthier and cheaper than a Chinese takeaway. Especially if you have steamed rice and broccoli on the side, as we like to. Toasting the sesame seeds isn’t strictly necessary here, but this step does add extra flavour.

If, like us, you love the honey and lemon combo, then you have to give this one a go!

  • Cornflour, 100g

Equipment

How to Make This Crispy Lemon Chicken Recipe

  • First, make the lemon sauce mixture. Slice the lemons, reserving a slice per person for serving. Add about 1 tsp cornflour to a small mixing bowl, then squeeze in the lemon juice. Next, add the garlic paste, honey, and the soy sauce. Add around 100ml cold water, stir well, and set aside.
  • Next, coat the chicken. Slice the poultry into strips and set aside. Then add the remaining cornflour, sugar, chilli flakes, and five spice seasoning to another mixing bowl and stir well to combine. Add the chicken strips and turn repeatedly, to cover in the crispy coating.
  • Add a splash of sesame oil to a wok or frying pan and heat. Once it’s hot, add the coated chicken strips and cook, stirring, until cooked through and golden. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  • Add the lemon sauce to the pan and heat, stirring, for a few minutes, until thick and sticky. Re-add the cooked chicken strips and cook for a few more minutes, stirring well. Meanwhile, toast the sesame seeds by heating very quickly, stirring, in a dry frying pan or saucepan.
  • Serve the chicken piping hot, with the toasted sesame seeds scattered over the top, and a slice or wedge of lemon on the side.
