These easy garlic dough ball recipe is inspired by a popular high street pizzeria. Who wouldn’t want a simple homemade garlic dough balls recipe? While they are readily available in supermarkets, of all home recipes this one is so very easy. So why not try making your own? You only have to allow the dough to rest for 15 minutes, so it’s not a slow process. Baking takes just 10-15 minutes.

Can you make dough balls with plain flour? Yes, that’s what is used in this recipe rather than self-raising. You also need some yeast, but it doesn’t have to be fresh. The type used here is sold dried, in small packets. If you’ve ever wondered how to make a dough ball, read on to see just how simple it is.

This recipe does not involve making a garlic dough – rather, it is served with garlic butter. But there’s no need to make that if you prefer plain butter. Or you could use olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping instead. Feel free to use unsalted butter too: I state salted just because it makes the dough balls taste more like those you eat at a restaurant. Or buy chilled.

Equipment

How to make dough balls

  • Add the flour to a bowl, then mix in the yeast and salt.
  • Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture. Slowly and gradually, add a little water at a time, using a pallet knife to mix. Form the dough into a ball.
  • Knead on a well floured surface for 3-5 minutes. Divide into 10-12 pieces and roll these into smaller balls.
  • Leave the dough to rest and rise in a warm place for at least 15 minutes. Near the cooker, where the oven is heating, is fine.
  • Place on a non-stick baking tray, and cook in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 180 degrees (fan) or equivalent.
  • Meanwhile, mix the crushed garlic into the butter and put into a small dish for serving.

Great served as a side dish with pizza or pasta.
