I love to make variations on the Chilli theme – especially as there are so many ways to serve this classic dish. While I’m fully aware that this turkey chilli con carne recipe is something of a misnomer, I named it as such as it’s made with turkey mince, rather than leftover turkey.

As recipes for easy dinners go this is a winner – and it’s pretty healthy too. You could use minced chicken instead if you like, though turkey is usually more widely available. You can use thigh or breast mince – the latter is an extra lean turkey mince. Black beans can be used, instead of a tin of red kidney beans, if you wish to ring the changes a little. Feel free to add extras like garlic too, or a tin of corn goes well if you want to bulk it out.

Like my beef chilli – aka the true chilli con carne – this can be made as a slow cooker turkey chilli if you like. Just follow the method in that recipe, which you can see here. For the pan method, you can make an hours or two ahead if you like – it will come to no harm in a saucepan with the lid on. The flavours do seem to blend together better this way when making homemade chilli. If you do this, turn off the hob, then reheat until bubbling gently just before serving.
